Elementary Principal's Message:
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year. As always, we will bring our best as we set out to meet the challenges and excitement of a new school year. At the Viborg-Hurley School District we are fortunate in that we have a talented, highly qualified staff, a rich and rigorous curriculum, supportive parents and communities, a tremendous activities program and a student body that is second to none.
It is our commitment to: Empower our students to succeed in an ever changing world
I am extremely proud to be part of the Viborg-Hurley school team this year. My past experiences have shown me that it takes a team to help all students reach their maximum potential and it is my plan is to work collaboratively with our staff, our parents, and the communities of Viborg and Hurley to offer an academic program where our students can be successful and gain the skills they will need to be college and career ready when they complete their K-12 education.
The Viborg-Hurley Schools take great pride in providing all students with an opportunity to learn and grow in a positive, nurturing climate; recognizing each student as an individual that has their own unique needs and strengths. We are able to accomplish this through a differentiated instructional approach which helps all students succeed and accomplish great things by teaching to each child's individual strengths. The integration of technology and many other hands-on projects, creates an environment that encourages students to involve themselves with their own learning and to become independent thinkers. At the same time we pride ourselves on providing an academically challenging curriculum that engages the student learner and prepares them to succeed when they leave our district to pursue their dreams and future careers.
I am confident that this will be an outstanding school year and I look forward to working with everyone to continue the Viborg-Hurley Cougar tradition of academic excellence!
I invite you to explore our website to contact me if you have any questions or want to hear more about our school or just to stop in for a visit.
Special Education Director
Viborg-Hurley School District
I grew up on a family operated farm outside of Austin, Minnesota and graduated from Austin High School in 1979. I am the oldest of five children. My parents still live in Austin, Minnesota on the family farm. My sister Lynnette, her husband Bill and their three children also live in Austin. My sister Marlene, her husband Ray and their daughter live in Apple Valley, Minnesota. My brother Vincent, his wife Noelle, and their three children live in Minnetrista, Minnesota. My sister Diane, her husband Dave and their three children live in New London, Minnesota. I have one son, Alan, who lives in Howard, South Dakota and I have a seven year old grand-daughter, Charlie and a one year old grandson, Alan who also live in Howard.
I enjoy nature and the outdoors. One of my favorite things to do is to relax at the lake at my families cabin in Northern Minnesota. I also enjoy reading a good book, especially a good historical romance or suspense novel, or watching a movie. My favorite movie is "Pretty Woman" but I also like the old John Wayne westerns. I enjoy going boating and camping with my family even though you will never see me in the pictures as I am usually the one behind the camera at family events taking all of the pictures. I like to scrapbook and I like to do jigsaw puzzles. I enjoy learning new things and trying new technology. My goal this year is to learn a little more about my new Ipad and how I can use this tool in my daily work.
I earned both my B.S. in Elementary Education/Special Education (1983) and my M.S. in Educational Administration (1991) from Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota. I earned my Specialist's Degree in Administration (2015) from the University of Sioux Falls. Although I just finished taking classes, I still believe that education is a life long activity and that you need to keep learning and setting goals as you go through life, so I plan to continue to take classes to improve my knowledge and skills as time allows.
I am currently beginning my thirty sixth year as an educator and during that time I have been fortunate enough to be able to work in several wonderful and caring communities, where education is an important priority. The first nine years were spent in Plevna, Montana as a fifth grade, K-12 special education, and junior high art teacher. The next three years were spent in Sunburst, Montana as the K-8 principal/athletic director. During the next nineteen years I served as Superintendent in the communities of Geyser & Stanford, Montana and in Eureka & Hoven, South Dakota. For the next two years I served as the High School Principal in the New Underwood School District. For the past three years I have served as the Superintendent/K-4 Principal of the Viborg-Hurley School District. I will be starting my fourth year in this district this fall and am changing positions slightly. This year I am changing positions slightly. I will be concentrating on being Elementary/Cameron Colony Principal and Special Education Director, which will allow me to have more time to spend in classrooms. Another bonus of changing positions is that I will have more time during the summer to spend with my grandchildren.
I have many wonderful memories of the time that I have spent teaching and working with the many talented students and teachers that I have met along the way, however, I am so glad to be here in Viborg-Hurley and I'm looking forward to an exciting school year filled with new faces and memories. Please feel free to stop in my office and visit if you stop by the school.
