The Viborg-Hurley Public School received a $3,598 Wellmark Foundation Community Kickstarter grant for purchasing and installing additional playground equipment at the elementary school.

“We are also planning on adding some benches around the play area that have been donated by our local FFA chapter,” said Peggy Petersen, Superintendent, Viborg-Hurley School. “It is our hope that the new additions to our playground will encourage active and outdoor recreation for children and families in the community. We hope that families will bring their children here to play even when school is not in session because it is a safe and inviting place for children and their parents to play and enjoy the outdoors together.”

Grant one of only 23 selected
The Wellmark Foundation is a nonprofit foundation that seeks to improve the health of Iowans, South Dakotans, and their communities. Through the Community Kickstarter grant program, The Wellmark Foundation received 50 grant requests in South Dakota from various organizations seeking support for making communities more active or improving access to healthy food. This grant was awarded to Viborg-Hurley Public School because they focused on providing longer-term opportunities to make community members more active and was one of 23 grants selected across South Dakota

The Wellmark Foundation is proud to award a cumulative total of $214,028 to these 23 grant recipients.

“The community that the Viborg-Hurley Public School serves, clearly demonstrated a need for this new playground,” said Becky Wampler, The Wellmark Foundation executive director. “We are proud to support this project that will allow students and the community to continue to be physically active for generations to come.”

“We would like to thank The Wellmark Foundation for their generous grant,” said Petersen. “We also want to thank, Heidi Hora, the Economic Development Director from the Viborg Community Development Corporation, for her hard work and help on the grant application and also all of those in our community that got the word out and that took time to vote for our project to receive funding.  Finally, we want to thank the students in our local FFA chapter who built and donated the new benches.  We appreciate everyone’s help and support for this project very much.”
